Looters! Futa VC and Bursar Got Remanded At State CID Over Allege Loots of University Fund To the Tune of 157m Naira

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Tuesday, February 14, 2017, arraigned the duo of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Adebiyi G. Daramola and the Bursar, Emmanuel Ayodeji A. Oresegun, before Justice S.A Bola of Ondo State High Court, Akure Ondo State, on a 9-count charge bordering on obtaining under false pretense, abuse of office, misappropriation of funds and conspiracy to steal to the tune of N156,984,455.33 (One Hundred and Fifty Six Million Nine Hundred and Eighty Four Thousand Four Hundred and Fifty Five Naira Thirty Three Kobo).

The VC and the Bursar’s journey to the dock followed a petition received by the EFCC in 2016, alleging that the duo and the governing council of the University were entrenched in unmitigated corruption, fraud, mindless stealing of the funds of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State.

It was alleged that the VC misapplied funds, collected housing allowances whilst living in the government residential quarters, drew Furniture Allowance annually instead of once in 4 years as approved by the income and wages Commission, used public funds to finance private expenses, illegal payment of allowances to Council members of the university, gives self excessive cash advance, direct procurement of motor vehicles without approval/waiver from Bureau of Public Procurement, collecting bogus monthly interest, transferred and placed N100,000,000.00 funds of the University in a fixed deposit account without due authorization.

The 2 accused persons, however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

One of the count charge reads: “That you, Professor Adebiyi G. Daramola on or about the 2nd of September, 2016 at Akure within the Akure Judicial Division of the honourable court with intent to defraud, obtained the sum of Twenty Four Million Two Hundred and Twenty Three Thousand Four Hundred and Eighty Four Naira (N24, 223,484.00) only from the Federal University of Technology Akure, when you falsely represented that the said sum of money was for your Biennial family vacation overseas for the year 2015 and 2016, which representation you knew was false”

In view of their plea, counsel to EFCC, Dr Benedict Ubi asked for a trial date. But counsel to the 1st and 2nd defendants, Adebayo Olanipekun and O. Ubi was opposed to oral application for bail, stating that the counsel have to put facts before the court as to the reason why the defendants must be granted or refused bail, the the need for time to peruse and react to the content of the bail application.

Justice Bola, after considering the arguments of all the counsels, granted bail to the defendants in N10m bond, 2 sureties in like sum who must be professors in the Federal University of Technology, Akure, or public officer not less than grade level 17, must depose to affidavit of means, present title documents of landed properties within the jurisdiction of the court and must present evidence of tax payment for the past 3 years.

FG Goes on Rampage, About to Sack 3,500 Mostly From S/S, S/E Federal Workers to Employ 2000

NIGERIA’S Federal Government is set to relief its staff of their duties.

While about 3,500 workers are singled out to be sacked about 2,100 of those to be affected are from the south-south, south-east and south-west.‎

The Ministry of Communications is said to be the least affected with 66 staff to be fired, according to a report emanating from the online version of Sun Newspapers.

The report further broke the 66 affected staff into 41 from the south-south, 25 from the south-west, eight from the south-east and three from the north-central.

The figure further showed that Delta state accounts for the highest number of staff to be sacked with 14 while Akwa Ibom, Imo and Lagos have six each.

The document signed without a name and dated January 17, 2017 also shows that the ministry of Finance is to sack 503 staff with the southern zone accounting for the highest affected.

In the ministry of Education 809 are to be sent packing, but the report quoted a source as saying the list was yet to be completed adding that it might rise to 1000.

The ministry of Health will be sending away over 700 people while the ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism has 670 staff to be laid off.

The head of press and public relations at the Federal Civil Service Commission, Joe Oruche, reportedly confirmed the development adding that the Ministry of Education has the highest number of staff to be laid off.

According to him, a huge number of staff would be eased off from the system when the exercise is finally carried out.

Oruche was further quoted as saying the ministries were currently recruiting about 2000 people adding that those to be sacked were not appointed in line with the rules of the Federal Civil Service.

“Irregular appointments are appointments that are not backed by approved declared vacancies, in which case, government does not have the financial provision for them,” he reportedly said.

He added that the commission discovered a lot of irregular appointments which are not backed by approved declared vacancies.

“All appointment letters have a stipulated validity period of two months within which they must be accepted failing which the offer will lapse.

“Where some were backed by approved declared vacancies, the offers were not accepted within the stipulated two months.

“The commission also observed that some letters were outrightly faked and some of these faked ones are under investigation,” he declared.‎

Valentine! A Night of Woes by Henry Ibeleme

Tonight is going to be the night of all nights. The most beautiful mortals have ever behold. A night where the birds sings without a moment rest. A night where you get lost in his eyes and his enchanting alluring voice, captivating. A night where the twinky stars become more visible.

He’s going to treat you as if you were princess Cinderella herself. He will hold your hands like the most delicate of all ever known. His gaze will consume you and his gentleness, out of this world.

He won’t be restricted by mere money. He Will spend it all on you. He won’t be restricted by time, there will be lots of it. You will feel like a woman for the first time in your life. A feeling that has remain dormant within. Tonight will look like the only night that will ever be. Tonight will erase your plans for other nights. He’s stares, his voice and gestures will assure you that.

But remember, even the devil himself can act as an angel of light flawlessly. Remember, there are many more nights ahead. I really want you to remember that tonight is nothing but a mere illusion of love.

Red candles don’t dissipate love. Roses doesn’t foretell of it’s power. The only purpose tonight might serve is the planting of a seed into a fertile land which may become a ripe bountiful harvest 9 months from now. Don’t be deceived. Your dignity worth more than mere ice cream. It worths more than a mere suya or roses. In fact, no gift equals the importance of your dignity.

Don’t feel like you owe him. Don’t you ever have such a stale guilty of a feeling. What’s love if it’s not selfless? What’s love if a condition is placed? It is indeed nothing but LUST.

Forsake my advice, and you will see the devil in him moments after. Forsake my advice, and you will start seeing signs of a disease. Forsake my advice, and a cry will be heard 9 months from now. Forsake my advice, and you will be filled with shame and regrets. ‘Had i known” might ring evidently even to your own ears.

Valentine is about selfless love. It’s about visiting the less privileges. It’s about changing the world to LOVE.

Happy VAL from Henry Ibeleme

War! Governors Vs Efcc! Nigeria Governor Forum Set to Gang Up Against Efcc Chairman-Ibraham Magu

Paris Loan Refund: Nigeria’s 36 governors threaten war with EFCC chair, Ibrahim Magu

Governors of Nigeria’s 36 states have threatened to declare war on the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, over what they described as “unwarranted attack on the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, its officials and associated entities,” presidency officials familiar with the matter have told PREMIUM TIMES.

The EFCC has in the past weeks been investigating the governors’ handling of the Paris Club refund made to states by the Federal Government, and has invited officials of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) secretariat over the matter.

The anti-graft commission accused the governors of making some unclear payments to consultants which helped the NGF in computing and negotiating the refund due to each state of the federation.

The EFCC also blocked an Access Bank account belonging to the NGF, a development that led the Forum’s chairman, Governor Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara, to storm the presidential villa to protest, our sources said.

Our sources said the meeting between Mr. Yari and Acting President Yemi Osinbajo held on January 30.

“The governor met Vice President Osinbajo saying he has the mandate of his colleagues to request him (the VP) to call Magu to order or that the governor would do all they can to defend their integrity and that of their states,” one of our sources said.

“The governor said should Magu continue to harass the NGF, the 36 governors would strike in a way never seen before.”

Mr. Yari was further quoted as telling Mr. Osinbajo that Mr. Magu had in the past weeks subjected officials at the NGF secretariat to “harassments and ceaseless interrogations.”

“We have done nothing wrong and we view this onslaught on the NGF as a fishing expedition designed to embarrass, humiliate and insult the 36 governors for perceived or imaginary wrongdoing,” the Zamfara governor is quoted as saying.

“We urge urge you to call him to order or we will fight back whichever way we can.”

The EFCC is asking the NGF to explain payments made to Mallam Alu Agro Allied Limited, Melrose General Services Co. Ltd, Bizplus Consulting Services Ltd., Bina Consults & Integrated Services and other consultants and legal experts.

But in explaining the payments, Mr. Yari reportedly told Mr. Osinbajo, “As a duly registered organisation, we, in the course of our work engage consultants and experts in areas where we do not have in-house capacity and these consultants and experts are paid for the services they render.

“The right to engage staff and other experts and professionals to carry out work on behalf of the governors is within the purview of the NGF and we are hard put explaining the current development.

“We fear that the harassment has gone on for too long without any signs of abating and we are urging you to call this man (Magu) to order and desist from any further harassment of our officials and consultants.”

In his response, the acting president was said to have thanked Mr. Yari for calling his attention to the matter and pleaded with him and his colleagues to be patient while he looked into the matter.

PREMIUM TIMES however learnt that the governors are not taking the matter lightly, and have fixed a general meeting for Wednesday in Abuja.

Laolu Akande, the spokesperson for Acting President Osinbajo could not be reached to comment for this story.

But the Director General of the NGF, Asishana Okauru, confirmed that Mr. Yari recently met Mr. Osinbajo over the matter.

“I don’t know the details of their discussion, but I am aware the two leaders met,” Mr. Okauru said.

“I am also aware that the governors are very angry with what appears a deliberate attempt by the EFCC and its leadership to malign them and to feed the media with misinformation.”

Mr. Okauru said contrary to reports, he was never arrested over the matter at anytime, but that he willingly responded to enquiries by EFCC operatives.

The spokesperson for the EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, declined to comment saying he was not aware of the meeting between Mr. Yari and Mr. Osinbajo.

Mr. Uwujaren however later issued a statement saying the EFCC investigation on the matter was still at a preliminary stage and that no governor had so far been indicted.

Come and See Why This Zimbabwean Woman Pledges Her Daughter to Pastor As Tithe in Church

A Zimbabwean woman who suffered a number of miscarriages early in her marriage has shocked the Christian world after offering her daughter as tithe to her church leader.

The woman rightly named and identified as Convictions Mapfumo from Sally Mugabe Heights in Zimbabwe has given her child, who is now in Grade Three, to Holy Baptist Apostolic Church founder Bishop Susan Ziki Dube, who has assumed the role of the mother while the daughter assists in the church.

Mapfumo said after going through the painful experience of miscarrying four pregnancies, the leader of Holy Baptist Apostolic Church prayed for her, and she has now conceived three girls born in 2005, 2009 and 2011.

“After my struggle to conceive, I decided to give this child to God as a tithe to thank Him for answering my prayers. I was prayed for by the leader of the church. I have also given myself to working in this church because there is nothing more I can give to God for what He has done for me,” she said.

The child has now assumed Bishop Ziki Dube’s surname and addresses. Mapfumo said she registered her church leader as the mother of the child on the birth certificate.

Would you gladly do this too if you were in her shoes?

See Why Church Owned Universities Will Never Be Affordable By Ife Olaleye

There has been so much buzz about Church universities being expensive in Nigeria and I would like to address some of this controversies mostly using Covenant University as a case study.

Tithes/Offerings are used to build Church Universities? This seems to be a widely asserted theory. This is partly not true because most Churches don’t exactly use Tithes/Offerings for building church universities but create special donations for that purpose. Usually, the initial university capital projects are funded with these donations. We have to remember that the core mandate of any church isn’t not to create universities but to preach the gospel of Jesus and help the poor and that is done with tithes/offering to establish outreaches, pay pastoral salaries, build new churches etc.

Donations can’t sustain recurrent expenditure: while ‘excited’ members would usually agree to pay donations for the initial financial responsibility of the universities. No church would be able to get its church members to continually pay for its recurrent expenditure. In fact if any of these church schools were to try and choose continual donations as an alternative to ‘High’ tuition fees the next thing you would see are private university lecturers going on strike.

Are Church universities profitable? I do not believe any sane investor or business man would venture into the tertiary education sector with the aim of making profit. There is a reason why you wouldn’t find Otedola or Dangote investing in education. If you do your research properly you would find that till today Covenant university hasn’t made any profit for its proprietors. Let us examine the revenue vs expenditure of Covenant university for example. The Covenant university tuition(undergraduate) ranges between 600,000-800,000 depending on level/program but I would base it on 700k. There are about 7,000 students on campus at a given time so I multiply 700,000 by 7,000=4.9 billion. So the university’s revenue from tuition fees is about 4.9 billion.

When considering expenditure I would like to keep the value projections conservative. I believe Covenant University’s wage bill to be around 500 million/month but I would calculate using 400 million since that is the average wage bill for a Nigerian university. So 400 million x 12 months= 4.8 billion. I currently don’t know how much CU pays to get electricity but reports had it that in 2012 the university spent 700 million naira on electricity. I would deliberately exclude expenditures like research grant, conference support, Infrastructure, field trips, medical services, internet provision e.t.c because I do not have real data to conclude how much they gulp yearly. So using just wage bill+Electricity, the university has spent 5.5 billion when the tuition fee is about 4.8 billion. This proves the former NUC president, Peter Okebukola right when he said that ‘’Church universities were being too dependent on the Church’’. Also, the VC of Crawford did buttress the fact that the proprietor base still donates 500 million yearly to Crawford as subsidy. If these subsidies weren’t in place Church universities would have been more expensive that secular ones.

Assumed wealth of the Church: there is a saying in Yoruba land that ‘’the chicken sweats but the feathers won’t let you know’’. Would you believe that Oyedepo nearly missed his own deadline for the establishment of the first two halls of residence in Covenant University? because donations weren’t coming forth, until God miraculously provided.

‘Expensive’ tuition isn’t unique to Pentecostal Churches: whilst many choose to assault Pa. Adeboye and Bishop Oyedepo for charging high tuition fees. It is important to note that even Orthodox churches which are known not to be ‘’prosperity conscious’’ charge within the same bracket e.g Bowen(Baptist), ECWA(Bingham), Godfrey Okoye(Catholic), Adventist(Babcock), JABU(CAC), Methodist(Wesley) e.t.c

Expensive tuition isn’t unique to Church universities alone; Church universities are ranked to be generally good with Covenant University averagely in top three on the two out of four most reputable rankings in the world-Webometrics and Times higher education. However Islamic schools that are not in the top 50 universities in Nigeria but also charge about half a million(e.g Crescent) which is about the same thing CU charges.

The underlining purpose for creating Church schools; This is very important, the creation of church schools isn’t to actually teach physics and chemistry, but to create a spiritual revolution. Take that spiritual revolution away from CU, then it is by no means different from Afebabalola university. Therefore, if you are a committed member of your church you are already a member of that movement. For instance I am not a living faith member, but by attending CU I have joined myself to the spiritual movement of the church
